Description
21 years of being away from home traveling across India and later in the US had not dimmed my love for authentic Kerala dishes. The taste of homemade puttu / kadala, appam/stew, kappa dishes or snacks like Kerala mixture, murukku, banana chips, unniappam continues to linger not to mention the elaborate Onam Sadhya. Though it didn't exactly taste like my amma's cooking, the Kerala restaurants in India did help to a certain extent but in Charlotte where I reside now, we weren't able to find a restaurant that serves authentic Kerala food.
That's when I started my own preparations at home. My passion for cooking started at an early age so spending time helping my mom was never a chore and guess that is helping now. My friend's appreciation for my cooking increased my confidence and at their behest and constant encouragement, I decided to launch my own cooking line in a small scale - ‘Unnis taste of Kerala'.
On September 5th 2015, with the support of Charlotte Malayali Association (CLTMA) , we had our first sale at the Onam festival program at the Hindu Center. It was Janma Ashtami and we decided that there was no way better than to start with Uniappams – the favorite food of Lord Krishna.
I started with a small menu of typical dishes and snacks that are specialties from Kerala and hope to enhance the tea time snacks and meals of Kerala food lovers with authentic food from ‘Gods Own Country'.
