Nubian Rootz opened in 1998 as Charlotte's first and only home for preserving and presenting traditional African culture and history. Nubian Rootz grew to become an amalgamation of artists and professionals, who provided cultural education to civic, business and community organizations across the Carolinas. Affectionately known as Charlotte's First Lady of African Dance, Gerry Chisolm, and Nubian Rootz Co-founder Kalonji Bartee (1964- 2013) and the Nubian Rootz Dance Ensemble, performed rich rhythms and dancing from the continent for hundreds of thousands of Carolinians.
